The War on Drugs at Chicago Music Exchange

The energy was heightened around Chicago Music Exchange as we prepared for friends of the store, The War on Drugs, to make their grand entrance. A private event a few months in the making, the day was finally here. Beer had arrived, the food truck was parked outside, and invitees began to trickle in. All we needed now was a music-filled Friday night to start the weekend with just the right amount of inspiration. See more photos from this event on our Facebook page.

With an intimate crowd awaiting their performance, the band stepped out from their private room and set up. One of our own, Drew Kavanaugh, took the mic to thank those who made the event happen and, most importantly, his brother, Charlie Hall of The War on Drugs. Drew stepped off-stage, followed by a round of applause and introductions by the band. Opening with "Eyes to the Wind", their atmospheric rock had no problem filling the space. Everyone stood in awe as the band powered through an amazing set marked with unbelievable guitar solos, touching on most songs from their March 2014 release, Lost in the Dream, and even including a track from 2011's Slave Ambient.

Between stories about the dentist and some time spent picking guitars off the wall for the songs to follow, the outfit made their way to a personal favorite, “An Ocean Between The Waves”. The song's instrumentation built and built, layers of guitars, keys, sax. It all swirled together into one magnificent, all-encompassing soundscape... and then done. That was it. The showroom rang with remnants of music, and after it had dissipated and the audience came to - applause.

Ending on crowd favorite, "Red Eyes".

Enjoy this incredible video of the performance (more to come):

The next day, a few CME employees were lucky enough to make it out to AV Fest to catch The War on Drugs again. What can we say, we're more than just gear-heads - we're dedicated music fans, too.
