Epiphone has been making guitars for over 140 years. Epiphone started in the mountains of Greece and moved to Manhattan’s Lower East side in the early 1900s. For the first half of the 20th century, Epiphone was a leader in manufacturing guitars, archtop jazz guitars, banjos, mandolins and other instruments. Throughout the decades, Gibson was Epiphone’s greatest rival. In 1957, Gibson purchased Epiphone, resulting in a landmark merger in music history. The Epiphone Casino model was played by the Beatles, Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison.
