8 Riffs That'll Help Get You Through Monday

Monday. Eugh. It's a rare breed of human that actually enjoys a Monday. We know you'll never truly appreciate this day of the week, but with a little help from our riff gurus Alex and Marc, maybe it will start a little more tolerably.

Let's begin.

1. "Let's Dance" by David Bowie

Alex says: I like listening to music in the morning when I'm hanging out with my daughter, and she loves David Bowie. This is one of my favorite Bowie tracks, and it's a great way to start my day. Plus, Stevie Ray Vaughan!

2. "YYZ" by Rush

Marc says: This quickly paced classic has so much going on and gets my brain working properly. For me, Moving Pictures was a highly influential album as a bassist and holds up to this day. For those of you who avoid Rush for the vocals, but love the instrumental, give this a shot. You won't regret it.

3. "Redneck" by Lamb Of God

Alex says: I try and exercise before I go into work, and this song pumps my shit up. Nothing gets the blood flowing like metal, and Chris Adler's drums on this track will kick your ass right into gear.

4. "Let it Whip" by Dazz Band

Marc says: One of the funkiest, smoothest, fattest sounding bass lines ever. It will certainly wake you up and get the blood flowing on the morning commute.

5. "Take Me Home Country Roads" by John Denver

Alex says: John Denver pumps my shit up! For real though - I love John Denver, and this is one of his best tracks. It's a great way to mellow out and forget all that Monday bullshit.

6. "Peg" by Steely Dan

Marc says: Chuck Rainey has always been able to bring out the smoothest of sounds, and if you don't know who that guy is, you need to educate yourself quickly. Rick Marotta's groove flows so perfectly in the pocket, Rainey's bass line (which he sneaks some tasteful slap in) resonates through the bones, and you're even blessed with a chorus of sweet harmonies multi-tracked by yacht-rock god, Mr. Michael McDonald.

7. "Took A Turn" by Young Widows

Marc says: This superb bass intro has become a standard for my own line-check at shows, as Nick Thieneman's bass tone is simply CORRECT. Once the drums kick in (with command of guitarist/lead vocalist Evan Patterson), the swampy-fury will help you plow through any mess the week presents you.

8. "Station Approach" by Elbow

Alex says: This is a British band that I don't think a lot of Americans have heard, but they are so good at making the kind of music that makes your hair stand up. This is a great song if you want to feel a little happy, a little sad, a little sentimental. Its a mixed bag is what I'm saying, but I love playing this track in the middle of the day and just letting it take me there.

So, close your eyes and let these sweet jams melt those Monday blues away. Listen to them enough, and before you know it, it'll be Tuesday.  Did we miss your Monday staple? Let us know what helps you get through Monday in the comments section below.
