Fender Custom Shop “Chicago Special” Series
When it comes to the sound of a Fender “Chicago Special” guitar, we here at CME, would all have to say that the "Chicago sound" all starts with the pickups. So, when you see “Chicago Special” you know that you’re getting a range of tones that we, here at CME, think epitomizes the broad-ranging appeal of each instrument, wherever Fender instruments are played!

Relic
Instruments featuring Fender Custom Shop’s Relic® treatment replicate the authentic, worn-in wear of a guitar that has experienced many years of regular use in clubs and bars, boasting marks that tell a story, finish checking all over the body—plus, scars, dings, and dents, from the bridge to the headstock.

“Chicago Special” Pickups
With the “Chicago Special” series of instruments, we aimed to achieve what we think of as the quintessence of Fender tones by setting our sights on our preferred pickup sets for each model.

All of the pickups in Fender “Chicago Special” models were designed by Chicago Music Exchange in collaboration with Mike Lewis, Vice President of Product Development at Fender Custom Shop, and are only available on “Chicago Special” Fender models at CME, or on Custom Shop orders from Chicago Music Exchange—i.e., these pickups cannot be obtained from any other retailers, or directly from Fender (nor are they currently available on the aftermarket).

Each pickup set is precisely calibrated for balanced output—using our preferred enamel wire gauges and alnico magnets in each pickup—then potted in shellac for an open, wide-range frequency response, which tends to preserve more high-frequencies than potting in wax or lacquer.

Fender “Chicago Special” Telecaster Pickups
  • Bridge: Wide-diameter Alnico III magnets, using 43-gauge enamel wire for hot, juicy tone, with additional winds added, based on the windings of the first blackguard Teles made from 1950-51
  • Neck: Wide-diameter Alnico V magnets, using 43-gauge enamel wire for high output, clarity, and punch (or Seymour Duncan Antiquity Humbucker for HS configurations)

We’re all musicians here at Chicago Music Exchange and we want you to love the gear you get from us. We understand that sometimes you get a piece of gear that doesn’t work out for you. That’s why we offer an easy return policy to take the stress out of purchasing from us.

If you decide you'd like to return an item, please contact your Sales Rep, chat us, or give us a call.

If you placed your order on Amazon or eBay, we advise issuing the return request from your account on the platform of purchase - our Customer Service team will process a refund upon receipt of the item(s).

Most new items may be returned within 30 days of delivery and most vintage & used items may be returned within 3 days of delivery for a full refund, exchange, or store credit. Please pack the product safely for the journey back to us. If the product was shipped for free, the charge will be deducted from refund, unless the reason for the return is outside normal circumstances.

We reserve the right to charge a restocking fee based on the return condition. Some items we just can’t take back for returns, due to a one time function like strings or drums heads and other times it’s not sanitary to do so with microphones or harmonicas.
