Jazzmasters were first introduced by Fender at the 1958 NAMM Show. Jazzmasters were designed for jazz guitarists as a sibling to the Fender Stratocaster, but instead caught on with surf music and instrumental rock of the 50s and 60s. Since then, Fender Jazzmasters have been adopted by many musical genres and popular artists from Elvis Costello and Frank Zappa to The Cure, Radiohead and The Flaming Lips.

Some key Jazzmaster characteristics are the offset-waist body, floating tremolo with tremolo lock, pickup circuit featuring “roller” thumbwheel controls and slide switch, string resonance, and the ability to produce feedback.
