Paul Reed Smith is an American guitar manufacturer based in Maryland, founded by luthier Paul Reed Smith. Commonly referred to as ‘PRS’, Paul Reed Smith makes high-end electric guitars and custom shop guitars. Paul Reed Smith began building guitars when he was in college – his breakthrough occurred when Carlos Santana began playing the hand-built PRS guitars.
Paul Reed Smith electric guitars are made of mahogany, with a maple top on most models. They are known for highly figured tops – flame maple, quilt maple, figured maple creating the effect of tiger stripes. PRS signature fret markers include standard birds and the optional moons. PRS is dedicated to a guitar's rich heritage while committed to new technologies that will improve the product's tone as well as the playability. They are constantly listening, implementing change, and refining their craft. The craftsman and women at PRS have a strong passion for building instruments and also for the music that these instruments help create. This is absolutely reflected in their guitars. Today, PRS Guitars is one of the top guitar making companies in the USA and users include the likes of: Carlos Santana, Tim Mahoney, Steven Wilson, Jimmy Buffett, Ted Nugent, Dave Navarro, and Mark Tremonti.
