Mission: To demystify modular synthesis through a series of weekly free workshops. Participants will build an understanding of basic synthesis concepts and techniques in a fun, encouraging, and hands-on environment. Questions encouraged, radical modular tone guaranteed.
Location: CME Synth Room
Time: 12pm - 1:30pm, 2nd Saturdays
Session 1 - SOUND - July 13th
In our first session, we’ll start at the beginning and explore the different sound sources available in the modular universe. From analog and digital oscillators to samplers, resonators, and drums, we’ll take a deep dive into the broad sonic pallet that eurorack has to offer and discuss the applications and theory behind them.
There will be a 30-minute presentation and then students are invited to engage and experiment with the instruments. During this time students will be able to freely patch and ask questions pertaining to the instrument and that month’s topic.
Gear to be featured: Make Noise STO, Make Noise Morphagene, Mutable Instruments Rings, Noise Engineering Basimilus Iteritas Alter, Moog Mother 32, Moog DFAM
Session 2 - CONTROL - August 10th
For our second installment we’ll learn how to control the sounds we previously explored and how to bend them to our musical will. This discussion will focus on the use of CV (control voltage) and how to implement that language into the modular system. Students will learn the functionality of modular building blocks such as VCAs, Envelope Generators, Filters, and more!
After a 45 minute presentation students will be invited to get hands on with the instruments and explore that day’s lesson.
Gear to be featured: Make Noise QPAS, Make Noise MATHS, Make Noise Optomix, Doepfer WASP Filter, Moog Mother 32, Moog DFAM
Session 3 - Composition - September 14th
There are virtually endless ways to make music and sound within a modular system. This month we will focus on the use of step sequencers and modulation sources to create evolving musical ideas and textures. We’ll discuss the implementation of midi and other outboard synthesizer’s incorporation with the eurorack format. This is sure to be a super fun class : )
Session 4 - Moog Mother-32 - October 12th
In this special installment of Modular 101, we’ll be taking a deep dive into the widely acclaimed Moog Mother-32. This beautiful semi-modular synthesizer has become a staple in the modular community and a terrific starting point for those looking to jump into the world of patchable synths. Join us to explore the ins and outs (literally) of this iconic and affordable instrument.
