Sandberg Guitars | Build Your Sandberg With Us
Sandberg’s “Configurator” Gives You Access to a Huge Array of Custom Options Available for Your Next Bass!
Here at CME, we spend a lot of time working with the custom shops at our favorite instrument manufacturers, selecting the specs we like, in different combinations. Sometimes, we do this to recreate period-specific instruments—with all the hardware, pickups, and aesthetic accents to match. Other times, we want to see souped up versions of tried-and-true models, just to make a guitar that’s totally tricked out in the ways that we know CME customers love!
Now, Sandberg puts the same customization tools that our CME product buyers use directly into our customers’ hands! From the body shape, to the fretboard, to the tonewoods, finish, hardware, and everything in between you might want—you can fully customize the next bass you buy from CME using Sandberg’s “Configurator” webpage.
Customized German Engineering
Founded by two friends in 1986, German-based Sandberg Guitars has specialized in building premium bass guitars for over 35 years. While initially training as a piano maker in Braunschweig, Germany, founder Holger Stonjek discovered his true passion—building and repairing bass guitars. He opened a small factory with business partner Gerd Gorzelk in an old farm building located along a street in Wolfsburg from which the company takes its name.
After its fledgling years of building individually produced, custom instruments, Sandberg expanded to a larger facility in Braunschweig, where they continued innovating their instrument manufacturing process, expanding their line to include an array of exotic tonewoods with a wider selection of options that grew its appeal in the mainstream market, catching the attention of session players like Ken Taylor (Bruce Springsteen, Brian May, Peter Maffay) and Ida Nielsen (Prince)—in addition to bassists in bands touring the world like Rammstein, Dimmu Borgir, and Opeth. Over the years, Sandberg has garnered the attention of bassists and musicians internationally, and it has grown to become the second-largest manufacturer of electric basses in Germany!
Since the company’s founding, every instrument Sandberg has produced has received individual care and attention—from the hand-shaping of each neck, precise fretwork, hand-contoured bodies in variety of available shapes, to remarkable finish work, fine sanding. In addition, Sandberg has made use of a number of unique aging processes, including a gentle, slow wood-roasting process developed as part of an intensive research project with the University of Dresden, dubbed “Thermo Treatment,” as well as “Vibration Treatment”—with both processes used to enhance sustain and give more pronounced attack characteristic of an older, well-worn instrument.
