Fulltone custom ranger boost pedal
Henry Hunk ditches the nerd talk for some tone time and digs into our Fulltone Custom Shop Ranger. This power-packed Dallas Rangemaster treble booster clone will transform you* into Iommi, May, or Bolan with a single stomp.
*Hairstyles may vary.
This Fulltone Ranger Custom Shop pedal will transport you back to the golden days of the Dallas Rangemaster, a simple but powerful effect used by such luminaries as Tony Iommi, Brian May, Marc Bolan from T Rex, Rory Gallagher, and, of course, the quintessential Clapton Beano tone.
This circuit enhances even-ordered harmonics, something almost no other boost, fuzz, or drive does. If you look at the waveform it generates on an oscilloscope, you'll see that it does severe asymmetrical clipping. In other words, half of that waveform is going to get chopped off way more than the other half, which leads to this particular harmonic content.
The control layout is super simple. You've got a single level knob, six-position rotary selector, four different range master tones, including the original RM-1, RM-2, and an internal transistor bias adjustment pot. One more thing to note is the proprietary power supply design, which allows you to use any standard Boss-style barrel plug adapter, despite the pedals PMP germanium circuitry. All right, that's enough nerd talk — tone time.
This pedal is a great choice for anyone who already has a guitar and amp that they love, particularly an amp that they can push pretty hard and get some gain out of it, but they just want to take it to the next harmonic level, especially if they're trying to go after some of those classic late rock and roll or early proto-metal sounds. This pedal will take you there.
