The ever-unique La Baye guitars are the brainchild of Dan Helland, a guitarist and teacher out of Green Bay. While some guitarists and gear nerds would swear by the effects of the cut and type of wood of the body, others thought an electric solidbody was nothing more than a slab of wood with a neck and pickups. To him, an electric guitar was just a 2×4 with a neck. With this concept in mind, Helland had Holman-Woodell build him around 45 "Six", "Twelve", and "Four" guitars. At the Summer NAMM show in Chicago in 1967, where they produced zero orders, despite being all the rage. Today, the La Baye guitars are sought-after collector's instruments for their place in guitar history.
