Gibson SG Special Black Refin 1965

Description & Specs

The following specs were carefully collected and recorded by a skilled technician. For a more detailed description and questions regarding sound, feel, or cosmetic condition, please call to speak to one of our experts.

Finish: The body and neck have been fully refinished, aside from possibly the headstock face.

Body Material: Mahogany Body

Body Details: Solid mahogany body. The pickup cavities were converted from P90 cavities to humbucker prior to the refinish. The vibrato tailpiece has been replaced with a stop bar.

Neck Material: Mahogany Neck

Fingerboard Material: Rosewood

Neck Profile: "C" profile

Neck Thickness (IN): .80" (1st fret), .98" (12th fret)

Fingerboard Radius: 11.00"

Nut Width: 1-1/2"

Scale Length: 24-3/4"

Neck Details: Set-in mahogany neck with bound rosewood fretboard and dot inlays. The neck has been refretted, and it appears the fingerboard radius changed from 12" to 11" during the refret. A portion of the neck binding at the bass side of the heel also appears to have been reglued.

Electronics: The guitar has been converted from P90s to humbuckers, and has a Gibson patent number neck pickup and Manlius Landmark PAF-style bridge pickup. The original pickups have not been included. The wiring harness appears original, although a few solder joints have been touched up. The pickup solder lug on the bridge volume pot has broken off at some point, although a solder connection can still be made. The visible pickup codes date to 1965,.

Pickup Measurements: 9.4k (neck), 10.3k (bridge)

Hardware: Much of the hardware appears to have been replaced, including the bridge, tailpiece, tuners, and knobs. The original vibrato tailpiece was changed out for a stopbar tailpiece, and the original mounting holes are still visible. At one point the tuners had a large washer, and there is an imprint of this visible around the current tuner bushings. None of the original hardware has been included.

Weight: 6 lbs 3.8 oz

Cosmetic Condition: The body and neck have been fully refinished, aside from possible the headstock face. The refinish shows wear in many spots, and some irregularities including runs/drips and finish sinking into wood pores. The body has numerous small dings and scratches on the front; the back of the body shows considerable buckle rash and several additional dings. The headstock face shows quite a bit of finish wear as well, with numerous dings and chips. There is some finish chipping around the tuner holes, as well as imprints from tuners with a larger washer that were previously installed.

Tech Notes: Plays well with low action and minor neck relief; the guitar is currently set up with 10s. The frets are wide and tall with minor wear. The visible pot codes date to 1965; the serial number has been obscured by the refinish. The pot codes, original pickup configuration, body shape and style, and vibrato tailpiece date the guitar to 1965.
